Here are some key features along with the definition of EEPROM:

  • Offers significant improvement over EPROM, allowing data to be erased and reprogrammed electrically within the circuit.
  • Faster and more convenient: No need for UV light exposure, enabling in-system reprogramming.
  • Higher endurance: Typically supports hundreds of thousands to millions of rewrite cycles.
  • More expensive: Complexer design leads to higher cost compared to PROM and EPROM.
  • Used for: Configuration data, wear leveling in flash memory, settings that might require occasional updates.
  • Limitations: Still limited in reusability compared to flash memory, might not be suitable for frequent rewrites.

We at Semiconductors India deal in all kinds of EEPROMs for various Business needs. Our clients are from Industries such as Automation, Optical, Wearable Technology, Navigation, Home Automation, Chemical, Automotive, Agriculture and many more.

Definition

EEPROM, short for Electrically Erasable Programmable ROM, is a type of memory chip that retains its data even when the power supply is switched off. It can be erased using ultraviolet (UV) light and reprogrammed with a PROM programmer or PROM burner.

Design Considerations

- During the semiconductor manufacturing process, EEPROMs are designed and masked. - Transistor layout, width, and placement are crucial. - N-type and P-type semiconductors are used.

Erasure Mechanism

- To erase an EEPROM chip, it is bombarded with UV radiation through a quartz window. - The trapped electrons in the floating gate receive enough energy to escape. - The quartz window is covered with an opaque label during normal use to prevent slow erasure from sunlight and fluorescent lights.

Structure

- Each row of an EEPROM stores a memory word and connects to a word line for addressing purposes. - The number of columns equals the bits per word, with each column connecting to a sense/write circuit.

Applications

- EEPROMs are widely used in personal computers, allowing manufacturers to change the contents of programmable read-only memory before shipping. - Commonly used to store BIOS information and basic software for modems, video cards, and other peripherals. - Flash EEPROM (FEPROM) incorporates FLASH technology and is available from some chip manufacturers.

Selection Criteria

- Consider operating current, standby current, and power dissipation. - Access time (measured in nanoseconds) indicates memory speed. - EEPROMs may meet commercial, industrial, or military specifications (MIL-SPEC). - Variations in supply voltage, logic family, and package type exist.
